The End of Democracy in Nicaragua?
The recent declaration by President Daniel Ortega that Nicaragua will no longer hold elections is a stark reminder of the fragile state of democracy in many parts of the world. This move, made during a rally commemorating the Sandinista Revolution, is a brazen attempt to solidify his grip on power, which has been steadily tightening since his return to the presidency in 2007.
What's particularly alarming is Ortega's blatant disregard for democratic principles. By canceling elections, he is essentially declaring himself ruler for life, a move reminiscent of authoritarian regimes throughout history. This is a far cry from the ideals of the Sandinista Revolution, which aimed to overthrow a dictatorship. The fact that at least 46 people are currently imprisoned for political reasons, according to activist groups, is a chilling indicator of what might come next.

Since the mass protests in 2018, Ortega and his wife, Rosario Murillo, have been tightening their control over the country. The closure of thousands of organizations, particularly religious ones, and the forced exile of many citizens paint a picture of a government determined to silence any potential sources of opposition.
This is a critical moment for Nicaragua and the world. We must not let this blatant power grab go unchallenged. The international community, including regional bodies and democratic nations, should use all diplomatic and economic tools at their disposal to pressure the Ortega-Murillo regime. While the path to restoring democracy is often complex and fraught, inaction is not an option. We owe it to the people of Nicaragua and to the principles of democracy itself to stand up and be counted.
